EV vs Gas: cost per mile, savings, and charger break-even

Use this page when you want a straight answer: “Is my EV cheaper per mile than a gas car?” Adjust the assumptions and the tool will update instantly.

Step 1: Enter your numbers

These inputs match the homepage calculator, but focus on the EV vs gas comparison. For full home/public mix and state defaults, use the main calculator.

Use your all-in rate from your bill (energy + delivery + fees).
Try 280–320 for many EVs. Use your car’s average for accuracy.
Accounts for inefficiency from heat and overhead.
Used for monthly totals and break-even.
Enter your out-of-pocket cost after rebates (or enter rebates below).

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your current gas car's mpg, your local gas price, your EV's EPA-rated efficiency (kWh/100 miles), and your home electricity rate. The calculator shows your cost per mile for each vehicle and how many miles you need to drive before the EV pays back its price premium.

Typical Inputs by Vehicle Type

Vehicle Efficiency Cost/Mile @ Avg Rate Notes
Tesla Model 3 RWD25 kWh/100mi4.0¢/miMost efficient EV
Chevy Bolt EV28 kWh/100mi4.5¢/miBest value EV
Ford F-150 Lightning47 kWh/100mi7.5¢/miElectric truck
Toyota Camry (gas)32 mpg10.9¢/mi @ $3.50Avg sedan benchmark
Ford F-150 (gas)20 mpg17.5¢/mi @ $3.50Best-selling truck

Understanding Break-Even Distance

Break-even distance is how many miles you need to drive before the EV's fuel and maintenance savings offset its higher purchase price. Example: EV costs $8,000 more than a comparable gas car. You save 7¢/mile in fuel + 2¢/mile in maintenance = 9¢/mile total. Break-even = $8,000 ÷ $0.09 = 88,889 miles — roughly 6 years at 15,000 miles/year.
